Three-Tier Notes

Jotaid uses a three-layer architecture inspired by Design Thinking to help you organize knowledge from big-picture down to atomic ideas.

The Three Layers

LayerTypePurpose
TopProject 📁High-level container for a research topic or initiative
MiddleTheme 💡Groups related notes under a meaningful direction
BottomNote 📄The atomic unit — a single idea or observation

How It Works

  1. Projects are the broadest containers. Think of them as books or research areas
  2. Themes live inside Projects. They're like chapters — each one clusters related notes
  3. Notes are individual entries. They hold your actual content and can link to any other note

The Inbox

Every new note starts in the Inbox — an always-free container that requires no setup. Capture first, organize later: when you're ready, move notes out of the Inbox into Projects and Themes.

INFO

The Inbox is available on the free tier. Creating additional Projects is a Pro feature.

Converting Between Types

  • Note → Theme: Right-click → Convert to Theme. The note becomes a grouping container
  • Theme → Note: Only possible when the Theme has no children. Right-click → Convert to Note

Deleting Themes or Projects

When you delete a Theme or Project, Jotaid asks how to handle its contents:

  • Keep children: Sub-notes move up to the parent level
  • Delete all: Everything inside is removed
